Arrival and First Day - Young Learners

909 Burrard St 3rd floor,
#300, Vancouver,
BC V6Z 2N2

Airport Transfers

Transfers are compulsory unless students are accompanied by a guardian. In this case, EC must be given a No Airport Transfers Waiver Form. Students must arrive on Saturday and depart on Saturday. If students require transfers from alternative locations, fees will be quoted upon request. If the student is travelling as an unaccompanied minor with the airline, a fee of CAD 80 one way is charged.
It is vitally important that EC Vancouver is made aware of any last minute flight changes by calling the emergency arrival phone number.
Please send information regarding arrival time, flight number, airline, name of airport and terminal number to EC Head Office one month before the student’s arrival. If this information does not reach us at least 7 days prior to the student’s arrival, EC Vancouver will not be responsible for providing airport transfers to the student and will not offer any compensation to students who have not been picked up because of this.
The airport transfer service is offered every day of the week, 24 hours a day. For departures, students are picked up 3 hours before their flight.

Student Arrivals

Students will be met by an EC representative holding a sign with the EC logo. For international flights, the EC representative will be standing outside the Immigration and Customs area. If arriving via a domestic flight, students will be met in the baggage claim area.

Approx. 60 minutes by public transport

EC staff

EC employs a number of Social Leaders and Customer Service Officers for the Young Learner programmes, and all staff benefit from a rigorous in-house training programme. Their role is to ensure that students have an enjoyable and safe stay, and to provide constant support to International Leaders.

First Day

On the first day, after evaluation, registration and orientation, students will be taken on a tour. Students begin their activities on the first day. The next day, students go directly to the school.

Registration and orientation begin at 9:30am.

Welcome Pack

Students are given a Welcome Pack, either at the airport (Homestay students) or at the school on the first day (Day Programme students). The Welcome Pack includes a bus ticket to get to school on the first day (Homestay students) and other useful information.

Welcome Talk

Students will have a welcome talk and registration after their placement test. An orientation will consist of academic, accommodation and activities information. Students will receive:

  • schedule of classes
  • directions to class
  • activity calendar

Placement Test

Between 10:00 and 12:00, students will take their placement test which will assess them in all key skill areas. This  allows academic staff to place students in the relevant group for their ability.

A Young Learner student handbook will be given on the first day of classes. This handbook contains activity descriptions, a map of Vancouver, a map of the school, a metro map, homestay responsibilities and emergency contact information.

A signed parents' consent/waiver form is required for all bookings and must be received along with the enrolment form.
