Climate

Fredonia is warm and sunny in the summer, with lots of beach days, and an average of 75-80°F in August. Temperatures dip below freezing in winter months, with perfectly temperate springs and falls in the 50-60°F range.

If you are not at school and are in an emergency you can call 911 for ambulance, fire department or police department from any telephone or call the school’s emergency number +1 716-679-8998.

Make sure that the doctor you are visiting accepts your insurance. If the doctor has any questions about your insurance protection, ask him or her to call the insurance company directly.

We do not recommend going to the emergency room unless it is a major emergency. Emergency Room visits are extremely expensive in the United States.

Other Useful Information

Driving Age

The legal driving age in New York is 16. Adult students can apply for a driver’s license at the Department of Motor Vehicles. Most rental companies require that you be at least 24 years old, have an international driving license, a second form of identity and a major credit card.

Alcohol Age

Legal age for purchasing or consuming alcohol in the US is 21 and many places will ask for identification.

Smoking laws

Smoking indoors is illegal. To buy cigarettes, you must be 18-21 years of age or older and must show identification. New York State Law permits smoking a minimum of 50 feet from entrances of buildings.

Insurance

All EC students must be covered by health insurance for the entire length of their stay in the U.S. There is 2 insurance products in Konnect: HTH must be used for ALL students coming on a SUNY Fredonia I-20. Insurance cards ready for them upon arrival to school. HTH must be purchased in 4 week increments: 6 week bookings will need to purchase 8 weeks of insurance. The other option is GuardMe and is the exact same plan as all other centers. This plan is to be used for B1/B2 and EC Fredonia I-20’s although we will also accept any insurance the student brings, same policy as all other EC centers.
