EC Virtual English for Academic Purposes, EAP (Australia) FAQs

1. Why have we created an online learning option for  EAP?
We want students to have the chance to begin their pathway journey from their home country, putting them in a position to be ready to start university or college when they can travel to Australia.

2. How will the students’ lessons be delivered?
Lessons will be delivered through Microsoft Teams, a great platform for remote learning that works from any desktop, tablet or phone. Microsoft Teams has everything teachers need to create engaging learning environments, from content and assignments to collaborative classrooms and chats. We will email the students with instructions of how to log into the Teams website for free access to the full of Microsoft Office suite, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint) products for one year.

3. Will the teacher be present at all times?
Yes, all classes are taught ‘face-to-face’ online with a qualified and experienced teacher

4. Do EC Virtual lessons follow the same curriculum as in-person classes?
Yes! Online classes will follow the same EAP curriculum which has been approved by our University partners. You will also have access to our online learning platform EC Online for unlimited self-study.

5. What are the starting course dates?
EAP online will have start dates every 5 weeks.Please see our Price List for details.

6 Is there a minimum number of students needed to start a class on the specific start date?
There will be no minimum number of students for these courses until March 2021.

7. How many students will there be in a class?
Classes will have a maximum of 10 students.

8. What is included in the price?

  • 20 hours per week of online face-to face lessons + assessments
  • Access to EC Online with many self-study resources 
  • FREE access to Microsoft Office for 12 months including Word, PowerPoint, and much more 
  • Acceptance to one of our many university or college partners in Australia
  • English for Academic Purposes certificate on succesful completion of the course

9. How many classes will students have to attend each day/week?
5 days of 4 hours per week, delivered Monday – Friday.

10. Can you give a bit more details around how each lesson will be structured?
Students will participate in four, sixty-minute lessons per day. Each of these classes are exclusively for EAP students and so 100% of the focus is on developing the language and research skills required to succeed in studying at an Australian college or university. Students take part in assessment throughout their course to make sure they are progressing adequately throughout the programme.

11. Will the classes be mixed level, if the minimum is Upper Intermediate?
From time to time classes could have mixed levels. The teacher can differentiate the task between levels so that students can learn simultaneously according to their own linguistic and academic needs.

12. What if a student is below Upper Intermediate level but wants to take EC virtual EAP?
If a student doesn't have the required English level for a Pathway Programme, she/he can take our  EC Virtual Standard/Premium course to advance her/his English to the required level.

13. How long will students have access to EC Online?
Students have full access to EC Online for 3 months after their course ends.

14. How will EC Online compliment the student's pathway journey?
With EC Online, students can study through a variety of online learning activities such as tests, lessons, texts and videos, wich are assigned based on the students' learning needs. They can also  have an academic follow-up (students with more than 12 weeks), access to student management (attendance, absences, classes, tutorials). EC Online is available from enrolment confirmation until 3 months after the end of the program.

15. Will there be an exit test?
There will be continuous assessment throughout the course to make sure students have reached the level needed to pass the course. Students will be counselled on their progress throughout the program. 

16. Will the student get a certificate?
Yes, if students pass the course they will receive an EAP certificate stating their level. 

17. Will there be an online speaking/writing test?
Yes, a speaking and writing test will be taken through the online platform. 

18. What happens to classes missed because of holidays?
What happens to classes missed because of holidays? Holidays when no classes will be held are the following: Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Lessons on Good Friday will be made up the following week, however lessons on all other holidays will not be made up, as in our in-school courses.

19. What does the EAP curriculum look like?
The Oxford EAP textbook is used as a key material, but students are also provided with several contemporary resources throughout their course. Some of the activities in which students will participate are:

  • developing academic reading and listening skills
  • building academic vocabulary
  • note-taking
  • learning how to structure different types of academic writing
  • learning how to research in an academic context and referencing correctly

Students take part in two key assessment phases: one focuses on the language component of the course, the second on genre and research skills. Students must complete and pass all assessment to be eligible for an EAP certificate at the level in which they are studying.
